Chi Taa Kwe/Peggy is Anishinaabe from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island where she was born and raised for the majority of her childhood and has returned in her retirement with husband Bernie.  They frequently visit son Ash and granddaughter Natalia in the Toronto area.

Indigenous art influences were from mentor, Daphne Odjig, alongside other Indigenous artists and the art Instruction from her elementary school curriculum.  Permissible, with her First Nation assuming major aspects of self governance of Education from the former Federal system.

The symbolic details in Peggy’s art are with a perspective lens from an Indigenous world view.  Welcoming in interpretations of Anishinaabe Teachings and ancient storytelling.  Peggy expresses personal appreciation in gifting her art for others to learn and enjoy.

This t-shirt design represents seven generations of Indian Residential School Survivors.  The Thunderbird is the closest Messenger to Creator to carry our prayers.  The Turtle represents ‘Turtle Island’/North America.  The Butterfly represents transformation and healing with an infinity of kindness and love.  Flora is significant to all Indigenous People, the Anishinaabek Nations source for teachings and medicine, the flora here is representative of some of our endangered species at risk of extinction or extirpation.  The Bee represents manifesting positive change and abundance.

This art is a collaboration to support THEMUSEUM in reconciliation efforts and bringing awareness to our North American history of the oppressive Indian Residential School policy, its far-reaching multigenerational trauma balanced with resilience and strength.  The profits from this shirt will go directly to the artist Peggy to support the creation of a platform for Indigenous stories of history, healing and prosperity.  Anticipating the opportunity to share the truth both of challenging and celebrated content that reflect the Indigenous experience.
